Water Supply Update:

June 3, 2025

Water situation update:

Natural flow on the Milk River have dropped considerably over the past week, hitting zero flow at the Town of Milk River this past weekend. Without significant rain conditions will be stressful to the aquatic environment and challenging for any water users. Drought stress is expected to continue until the start of operations of the St Mary diversion still scheduled for the end of June with a likely increase in Milk River flows by July 1st 2025. It should be noted that there will likely be movement of debris and poor water conditions on startup of the St Mary diversion for the first few days of augmentation and river recreationalists should show caution. It is anticipated the diversion will remain operational until a scheduled shut down by August 15th 2025 to allow for additional construction activities on the Halls Coulee Siphon in Montana.

The MRWCC continues to support monitoring of river conditions, impacts on the aquatic environment, and support stewardship with water users and the ranching community. If you have any observations of note including fish strandings, unusual features, or potential hazards let us know!

Funding continues to be available for producers interested in alternative water development/protection as well as fencing and restoration projects.
