Milk River Basin Approved Water Management Plan

The Province of Alberta released the Approved Water Management Plan for the Milk River Basin (Alberta) – Phase One on June 5, 2024. Alberta’s new water management plan for the Milk River basin is one of three approved water management plans in the Province.

This new plan will help the government work with the local agricultural community to maximize the water available in the area, supporting water use efficiencies, and water conservation measures. The water management plan enables water allocation transfers, and includes strategies to support improved water management and administration, while protecting the aquatic environment in one of the most water-scarce regions in the province.

The water management plan for the Milk River Basin does not impact administration of the international 1909 Boundary Waters Treaty or the interprovincial 1969 Mater Agreement on Apportionment.
